Does Texas Insurance Cover Hail Damage? Everything You Need to Know
How Texas auto insurance handles hail damage claims, what comprehensive coverage means, and your right to choose your own repair shop.

West Texas weather is brutal on vehicles. If you live in Midland, Odessa, or anywhere in the Permian Basin, here's exactly what your insurance does — and doesn't — cover.
Comprehensive vs. liability
Liability-only policies do NOT cover hail damage. You need comprehensive coverage (sometimes called 'other than collision') for hail to be paid by your insurer.
Your right to choose a repair shop
Texas Insurance Code §1952.301 protects your right to select your own body shop. Your insurance company cannot force you to use one of their 'preferred' shops.
Will my rates go up?
Hail is filed as a comprehensive (no-fault) claim. While individual carrier policies vary, most do not raise premiums for a single comprehensive claim.
